Public Folders, love them or hate them, they are going away as we know them. So, what do you do with all the data that is in there?
It’s got to have value, right? Otherwise why do you have terabytes of Public Folders? Do you know what you have? Do you know who owns the data? When’s the last time somebody accessed all of that information? Now that they are going away, what do you need to do?
You need a formal process for assessing your environment, creating an action plan, conducting remediation and migration, and finally, creating an on-going Data Governance strategy.
Do you have the tools for assessing the environment? Can you answer:
- Who owns the data?
- Who has access to the data?
- Who should have access?
- Who is utilizing that access?
- Is the data stale or active?
- Is the data classified?
- Do you know where the data can go?
If you can’t answer all of these questions, then you need to ask yourself – how am I going to remediate my data and migrate it to the proper repository?
